So sure enough we are back in the hospital just as I had suspected. Partially waiting for test results, partially just medicating pain and symptoms. No one was excited or happy to see us, but it was just like visiting the Cheers bar, everbody knows your name. We eased back into a room and I had already packed the basics knowing that we would likely be staying. Daniel was starting to get chills Thurday and started throwing up Friday and is now being tested to see if he is also possibly becoming septic. Good news is his ANC and all white and red blood counts are excellent and very strong on their own. Not too high indicating any type of other infections however, Daniel has something called BK virus which is something that all of us mere mortals have from the time we are about two years old but we all have the normal T-cells and immune system to suppress it, Daniel does not. This is severely effecting Daniels kidney and bladder. They see it a lot with new transplant kids also. It is very painful and basically a pain in the butt and just has become too unmanageable at home. He tested positive in his urine sample and we are now waiting for his blood sample results to see if he has it in his blood but basically the only thing to do at this time is to treat the symptoms. If it gets too high in his blood they may medically treat him for the virus but the medication is toxic to the kidneys so we want to avoid this if we can, his kidney function is already compromised from earlier medications. Unfortunately the doctors say that symptoms will likely get worse before they get better. If any of you have ever had a bladder or urinary infection, you know this pain, and I hate to say for a male it is probably worse (yes you heard me right, I admit it) and it clearly was apparent last night from his presentation of pain. Although we have had him on IV fluids at home for a few days at home he is now getting them round the clock here to flush our a badly inflamed bladder and this is to help loosen and lesson blood clots before they become too bad. Although Daniel is painfully passing a few small clots they can potentially get very bad in which case he may need a catheter which I know he does not want (he became whiter than his normal marshmallow shade when they told him that). Until this morning when they got him on a pain pump he was more than uncomfortable and up all night. With the terrible pain and lack of sleep we were both extremely irritable last night and Daniel had a few emotional outbursts and we argued a few times. I had one Terms of Endearment moment and by 9;30 this morning Daniel was finally sleeping comfortably and I was back to my 3 shots of espresso to get me going. By 1:30 he had shifted into a comfortable zone of pain meds hitting a threshold where he isn’t chasing the pain and can now hit the button for extra if he needs (in case he has a clot he needs to pass-I hope not). After a small lunch he woke up and said he was having the best day ever. He said he had a really nice morning nap, is stil in his pjs and gets to watch football all weekend---must be the drugs talking.
