It has been a lazy Thanksgiving weekend up here at the hospital. Rob has not been up here for a couple days. He has been stuck at work and busy at the house readying it for Daniel’s homecoming. Many things need to change in our lives, including some things at home. Daniel is getting a small room makeover and deep clean mostly which is very important for his health. It is crucial to have all sources of dirt, bacteria, mildews and contaminants out of his environment so I can be comfortable enough to bring him home and not worry about things in the house making him sick. Part of getting him ready for home is teaching and training at the hospital. Daniel is very capable of all medicine administration and his line care but they are reviewing all of this with us. Actually Daniel likes to do his daily care and typically just yells at me the way I do things so more power to him. Marion did some training (actually more just rechecking) today to see if he remembered some of his line care stuff. Of course he handled it like a pro. Marion is such a great teacher that is so encouraging and makes it all seem so fun and easy. She makes Daniel feel more confident about what he is doing (if that is even possible). It is her job to train us and send us on our way but told us how much she is going to miss Daniel. Once we leave here it is not encouraged to come back onto the unit, because of exposure to Daniel and other patients so she asked that we please call over to them when he is released and on the outpatient clinic side so they can come visit us when we are here. I really believe they will miss Daniel and are not just saying it to be nice. The kid kinda’ grows on you. We will meet with a pharmacist and other staff to make sure we are fully trained in all scenarios before going home. We also have an “independence day” before we go in which I go and request all meds at the right times instead of the nurses bringing them in. It sure isn’t as easy as when you had a newborn. They just let you take those babies home with zero training.
Today was a very funny football day. Although Katherine, a diehard Patriots fan, requested Daniel today, she was not able to be our nurse today, but oh boy that did not stop her and Daniel from going at each other. Actually she did stop in at one point for one machine beeping or something and Daniel joking was screaming at her, because he thought she was going to “do something funny” to mess with his meds. We had the door posted with NON-PATRIOT ZONE signs and warnings and such so it was GAME ON. There was a lot of trash talking up here in the 765. There was cheering and jeering and some door banging and lots and LOTS of smack talk, but in the end The Packers reigned superior and Katherine conceded graciously (sort of). That didn’t stop Daniel from razzing her for the remaining hours of her shift. The funniest was when we went on our walk after the game a new doctor (donning head to toe Green Bay gear) we haven’t ever met before came out of the doctor room and called after Daniel. He sanitized his hands and asked to shake Daniel’s hand and asked if they could get a picture together to show his wife. This made me laugh. He sure entertains his fans around this place.
Tomorrow should be interesting when Daniel’s buddy Bob (Psychologist) walks in with his head hung low and with a tail between his legs. Bob is from Boston and they have had an ongoing bet all season on this game. Bob will be wearing one said cheesehead all week courtesy of Daniel Hailpern. This will be one great photo opportunity for many people around Children’s Hospital. I can’t wait.
