I took Daniel out today for lunch. He wanted a sandwich and I wasn’t sure how it would go, but sure enough after hesitating and finally getting it together we decided on a (fairly) safe place to go. Gear all packed and mask on. I swear getting out of the house reminds me of when we had babies and it took hours and you had to practically pack a suitcase full of incidentals, just in case. When we got to the restaurant I scoped it out immediately for an out of the way corner, but as we were walking in I was quickly confronted by a very friendly couple. Out of a new habit I shielded Daniel, but noticed them approach Daniel. The father addressed Daniel calling out the Green Bay Logo. He said his son is the biggest Green Bay fan there is and I said NOT POSSIBLE. He then asked how many days out is he? I was completely taken aback. Now you are talking my language. GB is Daniel’s lingo, but this couple gravitated to us for a reason. Their son was not only a Green Bay fan but is 13 years post Bone Marrow Transplant. This wonderful man and wife, I could tell were doing everything to hold back from grabbing and hugging Daniel. We talked about how they had some of the same doctors (even 13 years later) and how they have a foundation that has raised well over a million dollars for The Children’s Hospital. They told me how proud they are of their son for being the 10th Anniversary child for the hospital and that they would like to speak more to us, especially because they already have made special arrangements to have a personal meeting with Aaron Rodgers next football season when he comes to Denver to play the Broncos and would like Daniel to be part of this special day. I could tell that behind Daniel’s mask he was now looking a little more further out than his deli sandwich he was about to have. Mt guess is he was smiling ear to ear under his BMT mask. Let me tell you that restaurant would not have been one of my first choices, but it was meant to be. We wished this lovely couple a nice day and you can bet Daniel will be making sure I call them by tomorrow. I promise I will. It was so nice to see that 13 years later this couple was still so warm and welcoming to strangers inviting us into their inner circle. I know this will be me some day. I don’t know what I will have to offer another family down the road, except an open heart and listening ear. I know we will have a legion of followers for Daniel as so many love him and his story. I know I want to get started doing something charitable once we get ahead of the game. I wonder how long it takes to get there?
