We had a very fun D[P]R Show today finally going in and sharing with everyone all the details of Daniel’s Make-A-Wish. We had to keep many things secretive and under wraps before hand so it was fun to spill all the details now. Daniel felt comfortable and confident sharing his point of view and his favorite memories. It was a joy to hear him talk about it with such happiness, and such pleasure to see his friends at the studio enjoy his ultimate glee at the peak of what we have all waited for for almost two years.
Then we finished the show with the second annual matzah eating contest. It was hysterical. Although Daniel was sure he would win, there was no such luck at BBOY 45 studios for him on this day. The newbie to the contest this year was Chris and never experiencing matzah dove right in. Cody gave up in two bites and chose to just enjoy the chocolate spread instead and competative Mark and Chris gave Daniel a run for his money. It was a lot of fun and my wonderful friend Ronit walked over on her lunch to join us on her birthday no less which totally made my day. As far as his regular weekly D[P]R show , I think this will be the last one for a while since football is off season for a bit. I will miss the antics each week for sure.
Once the show was over we decided to run up to the seventh floor and deliver some movies we have collected to donate to 7East’s library. 7East is where we stayed in isolation for Daniels treatment and Bone Marrow Transplant for a total of 9 months. Maybe a month of that was spent in overflow on 7West but who is counting. Anyway after getting special permission because once you leave those doors like we did there is NO GOING BACK and they mean it. because of risk of spreading germs to the patients there and maybe Daniel still catching anything. But Daniel is so healthy as far as his immune system goes right now we got the go ahead and the regular nurses would be so excited to see him after all this time we thought as we were to see who ever was working. We scrubbed up as we remembered to do according to orders and walked through those doors. We were bombarded with hugs and hellos from some of our favorite nurses who couldn’t believe how long it had been since they had seen us. Almost a year. I couldn’t believe it. They all were so excited to tell us how proud they were they had seen THEIR BOY on t.v. on Thursday and they told everyone they knew. It was so fun and then after chatting for 5 or ten minutes Daniel’s demeanor and color and his whole stance started to change. He started to get antsy which he never does when talking about him. I continued to visit with a few Doctors and nurses and then saw him sort of inching to the doorway and looking clammy. I cut it short at the point I saw his forehead beading up with sweat. As we started to walk out he was almost clawing his way to the door. At that instant I realized I wasn’t the only one that was experiencing PTSD. He couldn’t get out of 7East fast enough. It hit me that as excited as he was to go back for a visit, he just recognized in an instant what he had been through for a brief moment. I think it hit him and he wanted out fast. He said as we made our way to the elevator that he had had enough of a visit and he didn’t think he needed to go back again so fast. I said okay and just left it at that. We didn’t need to talk about it anymore. It was a quiet elevator ride down. Leaving the hospital today was a sweet one because we do not have a single appointment scheduled for I don’t know how long and I love that feeling. I can’t even remember the last time that happened. Okay I lied we have an eye check next week at UCH, but it is not here. We got in the car and headed to Daniel’s next gig.
Over a year ago Daniel met Andy Lindahl the side line reporter for the Broncos and he has had Daniel on his radio show on site a few times and had Daniel shadow him as a huge treat at the Green Bay-Broncos game which was an enormous highlight in Daniel’s year. Andy asked Daniel to come into his show on Tuesday to take part on his post draft wrap up show on his 760 radio broadcast at the iHeart studios and experience the in-house radio show. This was a new experience for Daniel and great one as he is learning all facets of broadcasting. When we walked into the studio we met with Romi Bean who is one of the Broncos Cheerleaders, but she had no makeup on and just dressed in jeans and a t-shirt. Barely recognizable in fact. She is also part of the radio show and took us up to quickly start the show. We were met by alumni Bronco Ed McCaffrey who is also part of the show. Daniel was an absolute equal contributor on the show as Andy or Ed and it was so funny how Ed kept commenting how he was glad Daniel was only 16 or he would be fearing for his job right now. Andy assured Ed that Daniel is his predecessor. Daniel was very comfortable in the closed studio setting and enjoyed learning about some new production features. All and all Daniel was a total pro. He handles the in and outs of radio well, he is so comfortable with any level of football conversation, no matter how challenging and is not afraid to delve into something new. I can’t wait for what that might be.
